We're Coming Out of Lock-down Some More
I've been here in England for 4.5 months now and I feel like there is so much to do now that many more places have reopened as of yesterday. I am scheduling myself into as many places as possible, I booked myself into 3 museums this week and more when we get back from Scotland at the end of the month Today I went to the Fitzwilliam Museum, known as the Fitz:
The museums associated with the University of Cambridge are free to enter, all that is needed is to book online, so fab.
The building is beautiful and I am overjoyed with the amazing art that I viewed today. There is a special exhibition on currently titled The Human Touch: Making Art, Leaving Traces. I adore this idea, as a potter I often say that my pieces will be around long after I'm gone. The exhibition focuses on hands, definitely a hard item to recreate through drawing for myself. I was fascinated by the many studies of hands by multiple artists. There were many pieces with hand holding displaying love, companionship and solidarity. Hands used to show protest and hands that heal. The smudge of a finger print on the edge of a piece of art, embedded in clay or used to apply medium is a magical reminder of the art's creator.
There are 33 exhibition spaces at the Fitz and I managed to make it to them all. My favourite were the Impressionists and all the ceramic displays. I am a lover of Claude Monet's work and was so happy to sit and contemplate over 4 of his artworks today. There was a bench in the gallery perfectly positioned for me to gaze upon his works, and I did! His pieces were surrounded by Degas, Cezanne, Renoir, Seurat, Pissaro and more, so blessed.
The ceramics collection is amazing. I was drawn to the cobalt and white, oriental lead glazes, Bernard and Janet Leach, Hamada, decorative British pieces, fertility goddesses and and and...Sooo great! I will be going back to take it all in some more. Did I mention its a 10 min bike ride from our Flat.
Here are some of my highlights from the day. Hope you are all keeping safe.
